MEETING POINTS 7: Ten Thousand Wiles and a Hundred Thousand Tricks

February — March 2014

Contemporary Image Collective, Cairo

Meeting Points 7 is a series of exhibitions taking place between September 2013 and June 2014 in Zagreb, Antwerp, Cairo, Hong Kong, Beirut, Vienna, and Moscow. Organized by the Young Arab Theatre Fund, Meeting Points is a biennial program of exhibitions, screenings, and performances held at several international venues over the course of several months.

This latest installment of the touring festival was organized around two themes: the unfinished social and political processes of the recent Arab uprisings and the current reconfiguration of capitalism throughout the world. As laid forth by the Contemporary Image Collective (CIC), its title is borrowed from revolutionary philosopher Frantz Fanon’s book Wretched of the Earth (1961), which reflects on Algeria’s liberation from French colonial rule, while the program’s foray into interlaced subjects include: the role of middle classes today in revolts across different geographies, forms of neo-colonialism, counterrevolution and co-optation, as well as the various strategies employed for countering oppression.

The Cairo exhibition was curated by the What, How and For Whom (WHW) collective in collaboration with CIC and featured artists Iman Issa, Sanja Iveković, Maryam Jafri, Rajkamal Kahlon, Kayfa ta & Haytham El-Wardany, Jumana Manna, Cecilia Vicuña, Basma Al Sharif, and Rosalind Nashashibi.

In the video below, Young Arab Theatre Fund Director Tarek Abou El Fetouh provides a general overview of the Meeting Points festival while also discussing this year`s curatorial theme.

A Scenography Workshop by Hussein Baydoun

A Scenography workshop by Hussein Baydoun

8-16 September 2013

Falaki Theater, Cairo, Egypt

Hussein Baydoun is a Lebanese artist, architect, and scenographer who is known for his unique approach to set design. Baydoun frequently participates in the creation and development of performances from their early stages with the view that scenography is an essential component to the creation of theatrical work, one no less important than the script. His designs are often inspired by the performance spaces in which he works, where he creates fascinating sets from whatever is available as he challenges conventional notions about theater production, such as in his most recent performance "Alice," which was produced in collaboration with Lebanese playwright and director Sawsan Bou Khaled. In September, Baydoun returned to Cairo to lead a scenography workshop following the same vision. At the American University in Cairo`s Falaki Theater, he worked with six upcoming set designers, in addition to amateurs, on creating imaginative environments from the remnants of old sets and other discarded objects. This video highlights the vision and development of the workshop as Baydoun describes the aim of his teaching methods.
